Sioux City Animal Adoption reminisces about BooBoo the bear

Booboo is alive and well 23 years later

FORKED RIVER, N.J. (KCAU0 - There are some days on the job that you just don't forget, and for a few workers at Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue, an unforgettable day decades ago has them reminiscing.

In 1995, a bear came into their care.

Twenty-three years later, it is much bigger for sure.

BooBoo the bear was just a cub when she outgrew a petting zoo.

Her owner used the cub as a down payment on a used car. A Sioux City car dealership accepted BooBoo only to find out that's illegal.

The bear was then turned over to Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue, who was able to find her a safe home at an animal sanctuary in New Jersey called Popcorn Park Animal Refuge.

Monday, employees at Sioux City Animal Adoption were excited to find out Booboo is alive and well.

"When we got her, she was bald. She had no hair and she was about six to nine months old, so she's at least 23 years old now, [be]cause they've had her for 23 years," said Cindy Rarrat of the Sioux City Animal Adoption. "So we were just glad to see her. It was a happy reunion even though we didn't get to see her in person. It was just wonderful to see her pictures and to see that she was still doing great."

Cindy says BooBoo isn't the only exotic animal to come through the shelter over the years. They've had cougars, mountain lions, and even a Bengal tiger.
