UPDATE: The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office have reported that a body was found in the Thursday house fire south of Dakota City.
They say that the homeowner, who was in Arizona at the time, said that no one was supposed to be in the house at the time. The Dakota City Fire Department located a body in the house while fighting the fire.
After an autopsy and investigation, the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office say the male victim died from smoke inhalation. They do not believe it is a result of foul play. They also believe the victim to be Native American.
The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation of the victim’s identity.
PREVIOUS: Authorities are responding to a fire south of Dakota City.
The fire was fully engulfed at a house off Highway 77 a few miles south of Dakota City.
Homer, Dakota City, and South Sioux City fire departments were on scene fighting the fire.
High winds and cold temperatures caused issues in fighting the fire.
The house is considered a complete loss.
Crews believe the fire started in the attic.
The owner of the house was out at the time. A passerby reported it to police.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
