Bishop Heelan football helmets used to show support for athletic trainers

Local News

Bishop Heelan Catholic School’s football team is using its uniforms to raise awareness on the importance of athletic trainers.

With a sticker on the back of their gold helmets, Heelan is showing their support for athletic trainers across Iowa. The initiative was started by the Iowa Athletic Trainers’ Society to show off how important these trainers are to football safety.

“Safety in football begins with having an athletic trainer at, present at games, practices, and conditioning tests and stuff like that to help kind of reduce the risk of injuries,” said Dan Nelson, Bishop Heelan’s athletic trainer.

The Iowa Athletic Trainers’ Society says that simply having a trainer present is enough to increase safety in all sports, not just football.

The Crusaders plan on wearing the sticker on their helmet for the remainder of the season.
