An unexpected “pit stop” for man’s best friend, turned into an emergency situation in Odebolt, Iowa Friday afternoon.
Emergency workers including a hazmat unit were called after a semi rig hauling liquid fertilizer overturned in a ditch at the intersection of highways 39 and 175.
The driver of that rig tells authorities that he tried to make a quick turn into a parking lot after a dog, riding with he and his wife needed to go to the bathroom.
The semi ended up on its side in the ditch. Fertilizer spilled into the ditch but authorities tell us they don’t expect a ground water contamination.
It’s not the first time emergency crews have been called to the area. Sac county authorities tell us a semi hauling corn overturned in about the same spot just 2 weeks ago.
The town’s fire chief says these accidents happen too often in the community.
“It’s a small town, we still get the big accidents and that type of stuff. And we train for it, got equipment and call the resources in that we don’t have to get the scene done and safe. Nobody’s injured. Nobody’s hurt. It’s a good day that way,” says Chief Greg Neville, Odebolt Fire Department.
No one was injured in the accident.
