Authorities investigate suspicious case left near Storm Lake fuel pump

Local News

Authorities investigated a suspicious package in Storm Lake Tuesday afternoon, causing a few nearby businesses to evacuate and streets to close.

Authorities were dispatched to Star Energy at 1504 East 4th Street regarding a suspicious case near a fuel pump Tuesday just after 2 p.m., according to the Storm Lake Police Department. They said they saw a black case sitting between two fuel pumps with no one by it. Police checked with staff to ensure that it wasn’t theirs, but staff told police they had no idea why it was there.

Police proceeded with cautionary measures, closing East 4th Street from Geisinger Road to Expansion Blvd. and Vilas Road from Richland to 4th Street. They also asked nearby businesses to evacuate, while they monitored others.

Bomb technicians from the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived, and after x-raying and checking the package, they determined that it was safe. Police seized the case. They then reopened the streets around 8:20 p.m.

Anyone with information about the black case left at Star Energy is asked to call the Storm Lake Police Department at 712-732-8010.
