A Storm Lake native and former New York Yankees minor league pitcher is recovering from critical injuries he suffered after an altercation last weekend.

32 Year old Eric Wordekemper most recently pitched for the Sioux City Explorers and is on this year’s preseason roster.

Omaha police say that around 3:15 Sunday morning they were flagged down near the corner of 15th and Farnam Street and found Wordekemper laying in the middle of the street bleeding from the back of his head.

Police have charged 18 year old Ameer Banks of Council Bluffs with assault causing bodily injury.

Mark Binder, a freind with Wordekemper at the time of the incident told police that the two were attacked by Banks. According to police paperwork, Wordekemper, Binder and a few others were walking to a friends truck when Banks approached the group, said something and then punched Binder in the face 2 or 3 times.  The report does not describe how Wordekemper was injured.

As of Wednesday night Wordekemper was listed in critical condition at Creighton Medical Center.  Police continue to investigate the atttack.
