ABC9 gives back to the community by volunteering with local organizations on Founder’s Day

ABC9’s parent company, Nexstar Broadcasting group, is celebrating 20 years of success on air.

This Friday and Saturday, ABC 9 staff members will be volunteering at Meals on Wheels, S.T.A.R.S and Camp Courage as an effort to give back to the community.

By pairing up with Meals on Wheels, ABC9 staff will help out by serving food to those in need.
“We provide to home-bound people who are 60 years of age who can’t otherwise get out of their home to get groceries, they can’t go to one of our congregate sites because they don’t drive,” says Connie Hancock, Meals On Wheels coordinator.
Jessica Topete has been volunteering with Meals On Wheels for the past three months and says it makes her feel good to know she is making someone’s just a little bit better by doing a simple service.
“It’s like the highlight of our day. We get to get up, do something nice for other people and you get to go home and you just kind of feel good the rest of the day,” says Topete.
Meals On Wheels is just one of several organizations that ABC9 will volunteer for.
Also on the list is Camp Courage where volunteers will help throw an exciting carnival for the campers before they have to return to a more serious setting in learning how to cope with grief in a healthy way.
“They’re having fun together feeling at ease because sometimes hearing that you’re going to grief camp doesn’t sound like that’s a really good way to spend your time if you’re a kid,” says John Giorgio, Camp Courage bereavement coordinator.
S.T.A.R.S is another organization involved in tomorrow’s events that provides healing services to families through a therapeutic human and animal connection.
“Here at S.T.A.R.S we offer animal assisted therapies to people with physical, emotional, cognitive, or social challenges,” says Angie Beaudette, STARS executive director.
Volunteer work with S.T.A.R.S will be focused on helping them beautify the landscape to provide a more serene and therapeutic environment for those who attend the classes.
Friday and Saturday are both very important days to all ABC9 staff members as it gives us a chance to show our appreciation by giving back to the community.
