Iowa lawmakers propose lighter penalties for marijuana

Iowa News

Iowans caught with marijuana for the first time could face a lighter penalty.

If you are currently caught with any amount of pot on your person, you face a serious misdemeanor charge that carries up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

But Senate File 432 would downgrade that to no more than 30 days in jail and only a $625 fine.

The bill passed a Senate subcommittee earlier this week.

It is unclear what the future of the bill is. In the past, similar bills stalled in the statehouse.
