A hunter and his dog were saved after his kayak capsized in an Iowa lake.

Rescue crews were called to Browns Lake near Green Island Wildlife Management Area in eastern Iowa for the hunter holding onto his kayak around 9:00 a.m. on October 20, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

They said that DNR conservation officers responded to the area as well.

Working with first responders, they were able to find the hunter, Jared Porter of Madison, Wisconsin, holding onto a tree in a floating timber area.

Porte and his dog were brought to the shore. Porter was taken to a local hospital and later released. His dog didn’t require medical attention.

Porter explained that there were no winds and the water was very calm when left for the hunt in the morning, but on his way back in open waters, a large wave hit, capsizing his kayak.

Thanks to a waterproof cell phone case, he was able to stay on the line with dispatch the entire time.
