14 newborn puppies are being nursed back to health at AHeinz57 Rescue. The little ones were thrown off a bridge in rural Missouri on Monday. The shelter says it’s a miracle they are alive.
Local 5 spoke to Terry Parkhurst over the phone. He’s the man many are calling the bridge hero.
“Opened it up and said oh my god it’s full of puppies,” said Parkhurst.
Parkhurst and a few family members were hunting Monday morning when they saw a man dump a bag over a bridge.
“I’m just glad we popped over the hill at the right time,” he said.
They thought something was odd and went to go investigate. Inside the bag, they found 14 newborn puppies.
“It was meant to be that we seen them and stopped and saved them,” he said.
The family got in touch with a local rescue who brought the little ones here to AHeinz57 in De Soto.
While the pups are safe, it’s unknown what happened to their mom.
“Don’t hurt her, we are so worried about the mom and what’s become of her,” said Amy Heinz. “They go through grief just like we do, and she is probably missing her babies if she is still alive.
For now, Amy is grateful for the puppy savers, and the two surrogate moms who are helping the puppies nurse.
“They are just so much more giving then people,” she said. “Not many people who would take on six extra babies without a blink.”
The bridge babies are going to be named after iconic bridges. So they always remember where they came from.
“We were going to name them after the Covered Bridges, but there aren’t 14, and nobody wants a puppy named Hogback, so we just went with famous bridges,” she said.
Ten will be named after bridges. And the other four will carry the names of the humble heroes who found them.
