On the heels of the Great American Smoke Out, a day when Americans are urged to quit smoking, KCAU9 news took at look at why such a day exists. Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of death and disease in the United States, killing more than 480,000 Americans each year.
 
Smoking Tobacco, whether through a cigarette or through a vape-pen, effects all of your body systems. Smoking leads to all kinds of health issues, heart issues and breathing issues. Those that smoke don’t just hurt themselves but also those they smoke around. Second-hand smoke claims 41,000 lives a year, making quitting more pertinent. In speaking with Wellness Coordinator, Deb Twyford from Mercy, there are a plethora of options out there to help put out that cigarette for good.
 
“Well, Nicotine Replacement Therapy can really make your quitting more successful. Studies show that people are more successful if they use the patch, or the gum or possibly even a medication from your physician,” says Deb Twyford, RN Wellness Coordinator at Mercy.
 
Twyford also says daily exercise and common distractions like a stress ball, chewing gum, or munching on carrot sticks are other big assets to your quitting success.
