SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – If you own a laptop, it most likely includes a webcam. You might be surprised how easy it is for someone to remotely gain access to your webcam?  The cybersecurity threat is growing in popularity.

Unlike some phishing scams, it can be almost impossible to detect someone remotely accessing your webcam. Experts say it’s easy for cybercriminals to get their hands on images that can be is used and sold on the black market.

“Visiting a bad link, downloading an unknown file opening a word document that’s untrusted. When a cybercriminal takes over your computer, they’ll take that webcam and they’ll actually sell them to people on online forums,” said cyber expert Brandon Keith.

An easy way to make sure images from your laptop don’t get stolen is to place a laptop camera lens covers on your device.  Should you need work done on a laptop, cyber police say don’t let a technician take control over your computer to help you, unless you fully trust the source.
