Woman badly injured in co-op accident shows great strength moving forward

Community of Sheldon raises money for 21-year-old woman injured in accident

SHELDON, Iowa - A 21-year old woman is tragically injured in a grain co-op accident in Sheldon. The community came together to raise money for her recovery.

A terrible accident at the Archer Co-op near Sheldon has changed the life of Fran Feekes forever. In May, Fran had her scalp completely ripped off, along with her ears, after getting too close to a truck PTO.

"It's the worst thing that I've gone through in my entire life, but it wasn't wasn't the end of the world, obviously I can still walk, I can still do what I want, I'm back at work," says Feekes.

Those close to her in Sheldon, hosted a fundraiser to ease Fran's financial burdens. Being in and out of the hospital did not allow her to work.

The 21-year-old lives and breathes agriculture. She was born and raised by a farmer, so all things ag related comes second nature to the woman who is currently a student at South Dakota State studying agriculture business with a minor in agronomy.

Because of her extensive knowledge on the ins and outs of farm life, she looks at her accident as some kind of  ironic experience.

"When the accident happened, I though 'wow I'm an idiot because I taught PTO safety at day camp at high school and I knew better yet accidents happen and they generally happen when you get too comfortable."

She's a warrior and a walking poster board for what strength looks like, not letting her circumstance hold her back in anyway four surgeries later.

"I know I'm stronger than I was before. I literally have been through hell now and I wouldn't change it because it's made me better, but I don't think I'm any different. I'm still the same person...you can either wallow in your self pity or you can look at it like let's get over this mountain, let's get through this."

She's only been back to work at the co-op for two weeks. Fran's next round of events include getting prosthetic ears and fitted for wigs.

A life forever changed, but a woman who refuses to feel defeated.
