West Middle Schoolers Creating Holiday Light Show

Sioux City, IA (ABC9 News) It might be a little bit early to start thinking about Christmas, but that doesn't mean area students aren’t doing so.

The 21st Century Technology class at West Middle School is currently using the latest in computer programming to create a light show with music for the upcoming holiday season.

Today students continued working on construction of the set, and even got a little help by Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman and West Middle faculty.

So far, they've built miniature Christmas trees, which will eventually be put on top of the display.

"In working side by side with the kids is to see how engaged they are in this, how much they look forward to the end result of this. But how much they're learning through each little detail of the specific project,” said Dr. Gausman.

So what exactly does the project entail? 75,000 lights and 256 controllers.

The display will be set to music performed by the West Middle School band.

Students ABC9 spoke with say they can’t wait to see the end result.

"It's gonna be really cool to see that we made that and it was our project that we started and finished,” said Maggie Irish, 8th grade student.

"I mean it's an honor to it because nobody else has really done it before around here. And we actually get the opportunity to do it so we can't even really take that for granted it's just a fun thing to do,” said Micah McWell, 8th grade student.

The project is scheduled to be finished in November. The public will be invited to see it, when it's finished.
