Upcoming Memorial Day holiday produces critical need for blood donations

Type O blood especially needed

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Sioux City's LifeServe Blood Center is putting out an urgent plea saying it's in critical need of blood.

The blood center says its seeking donations ahead of the Memorial Day weekend in an effort to boost the dangerously low blood supply.

Blood donations usually drop off around holidays, but this week's critically low blood supply has caused concern for the more than 120 hospitals served by the blood center.

"We will be closed for Memorial Day and with that not taking collections.  That puts additional stress on our supply.  With that in mind we are hoping donors will take extra time to come in and make a quick and painless donation," said Claire DeRoin of LifeServe Blood Center.

Officials say type O blood donors are especially needed. Walk-ins are welcome at the LifeServe Blood Center at 4501 Singing Hills Drive in Sioux City.
