Storm Lake couple arrested after man allegedly forged stolen checks

Woman was alleged to have stolen credit card

STORM LAKE, Iowa - A Storm Lake couple were arrested Saturday after the man tried to forge a stolen check Friday.

The Storm Lake Police Department say in a press release that they were called to to a residence at the 100 block of Oneidea Street for a report of stolen checks Saturday around 9:40 a.m. They say that they were told that the checks were stolen Tuesday, April 10, with two being forged on April 11 and 12.

While police were taking that report, they were sent to Citizens 1st National Bank on North Lake Avenue around 9:51 a.m. for someone allegedly forging and cashing a third check from the Oneida Street residence. Officers were tole that the suspect was Shane Meyer, 37, of Storm Lake. They were also told that he left the bank and was going south.

Officers later learned that Meyer’s girlfriend Lindsey Mortensen, 36 of Storm Lake was staying at the Budget Inn Motel. They met with her and while speaking with her, they reportedly saw the mattress move. They found Meyer hiding under the mattress and took him into custody. Mortensen was also arrested for violation of a no contact order

Mortensen was taken to the Buena Vista County Jail where it’s alleged that she was said to have a stolen credit card from the Oneida Street residence. She is charged with possession of stolen property and violation of a no contact order, both simple misdemeanors. She was held without bond.

After an investigation, Meyer was charged with the class B felony of ongoing criminal conduct, three counts of forgery, a class D felony. He was also charged with violation of a no contact order. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail and held without bond.
