Solar eclipse viewing spots set in Sioux City

Partial eclipse occuring Monday, August 21

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Locations are set for the solar eclipse viewing in less than two weeks.

The public is invited to view the partial solar eclipse in Sioux City on Monday, August 21 from 11:30 - 2:30 p.m. on the Sioux City Public Museum Plaza or the grounds of the Sergeant Floyd River Museum & Welcome Center.

Free safety glasses will be provided for the first 100 attendees at each location. Conditions will resemble twilight as the eclipse moves through. During the height of the eclipse, the sun at Sioux City will be about 93% obscured. Attendees may bring blankets, lawn chairs, and lunch to the event.

The only safe way to look directly at the un-eclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses.” The National Park Service distributed free eclipse glasses to sites along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail traverses over 3,700 miles across the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.

The Sioux City Public Museum is located at 607 4th Street in downtown Sioux City. The Sergeant Floyd River Museum & Welcome Center is located on the riverfront at 1000 Larsen Park Road. For more information, call 712-279-6174 or visit www.siouxcitymuseum.org.
