Sioux City Abandons Ticketmaster for Handling Ticket Sales

Sioux City (ABC9 News) - For more than 10 years, Ticketmaster has served as Sioux City's ticket provider at the box office and online. But when the company's contract recently came up for renewal, the city opened up business to any ticket provider interested in partnering with Sioux City.

After a lengthy evaluation, the city decided to make a change.

When it comes to getting tickets for an event, you probably don't think too much about the provider...at least until you reach the check-out cart and see the service fees. Ticketmaster's fees are among the main reasons why Sioux City facilities staff took a critical eye to their ticket provider.

Erika Newton, Sioux City Events & Facilities Executive Director, says, "The ability to lower our convenience charges which is something that our ticket buyers don't necessarily like. They don't like the high convenience charges and the high prices they have to pay when they purchase online or over the phone."

Effective February 1st, all tickets for events at Sioux City facilities like the Tyson Events Center and Orpheum Theatre will be handled through a new provider - etix. The one exception is the Florida-Georgia Line show on February 12th which Newton says is nearly sold out.

David Bernstein, a board member for the Orpheum Theatre, says that the move to a new ticket provider was a difficult decision, but made sense financially on multiple levels. "If you can buy a ticket to Sarah McLachlan or Rodney Carrington and it costs you a couple dollars less for the same ticket and the same ability to sit in the same seat...a lot of people I think would look at that as an improvement."

With the change, a few of the features will be going away such as Ticketmaster's Self-Service Kiosk.

So how will ticket purchases be handled beginning next month?

Either you can walk into the box office or visit the Orpheum (http://orpheumlive.com/) and Tyson Events Center (http://tysoncenter.com/) websites.

Newton adds that directing all traffic through these pages as opposed to the Ticketmaster storefront will also help to increase brand awareness and stay competitive with other venues. "One of the big benefits in going through etix is that they do try to brand the buildings much more heavily than we have in the past."
