Planned Parenthood to close Sioux City health center

Citing budget cuts, Planned Parenthood closing 4 location in Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa -

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced on Thursday that they will be closing four Iowa health centers due to funding cuts. The closures will effect the Sioux City location and offices in Burlington, Keokuk and the Quad Cities.

The organization sent out the following press release Thursday:

"Despite the support of 77% of Iowans and despite every effort to fight back against defunding by extreme Iowa lawmakers, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is now forced to close four Iowa health centers. The health centers that will close are in Quad Cities, Burlington, Keokuk and Sioux City.

These changes are devastating to the 14,676 patients in these communities and in neighboring areas who will no longer have access to their provider of choice.

Anti-women legislators – who are driven by their personal beliefs, not facts about patient need – are hurting Iowans and entire communities by preventing Planned Parenthood from providing crucial family planning services and life-saving cancer screenings. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland's goal has always been to preserve services for as many patients as possible in Iowa and Nebraska; these closings are a direct result of the "defunding" action first threatened by Governor Branstad in January.

"The changes PPHeartland is forced to make are the result of the budget signed May 12 by Governor Branstad and supported by Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and extreme legislators throughout the session. These health center closures are devastating for the patients and communities who rely on us, and for our staff, donors and supporters," said Suzanna de Baca, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland president/CEO.

"Defunding Planned Parenthood will set a health care crisis in motion in Iowa. We will be watching and holding politicians accountable.

"Planned Parenthood of the Heartland fought with everything we had against defunding. We turned over every rock, dotted every "i" and crossed every "t" in exploring our options in defending our patients and organization in the face of losing funding. However, the harsh reality is that, because of the dangerous legislation there will be women who fall through the cracks and lose access to health care.

"While politicians may have abandoned women in Iowa, Planned Parenthood never will. We have been in Iowa for 83 years, and we are not going anywhere. We will continue to serve patients at 8 health centers across the state. We will continue to provide education to young people and adults, and we will continue to expand our service offerings."

Health centers in Sioux City, Burlington and Keokuk will close June 30; the facility in Quad Cities will continue to provide abortion services until the building is sold."
