UPDATE: Charges pending agains Odebolt kids accused of starting playground equipment on fire

Sheriff says juveniles caused nearly $80,000 in damage to playground

ODEBOLT, Iowa - UPDATE:

Authorities now say criminal charges are pending against three boys accused of starting a playground on fire. As we first reported Monday the trio was playing with lighters when they set the playground equipment on fire at the OA-BC-IG school in Odebolt, Iowa.

The Sac County Sheriff says that fire caused 80-thousand dollars in damage to the playground. It's currently shut down as a result of the damage.

Authorities in Sac County continues to investigate a playground fire that caused nearly $80,000 in damage on Friday.

According to a press release from the Sac County Sheriff's Office, crews were dispatched to the OABCIG school at 600 Maple Street in Odebolt around 5:00 P.M. on Friday. When fire crews arrived they found playground equipment burning. 

An investigation by the Sheriff's office determined that the fire was started by three juvenile males aged 11, 9 and 7. Authorities say the children had been playing with lighters and were setting wood chips on fire under the plastic slide. The fire quickly got out of control and caused the equipment to burn. Damage to the equipment was estimated to be between $70,000 and $80,000. 

The State Fire Marshall's Office is currently assisting with the ongoing investigation into the incident. Authorities say that criminal charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
