New UNI president pushing for new scholarship funding source

President Mark Nook gathered with alumni in Sioux City Thursday night

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The man hired to help build enrollment at the University of Northern Iowa is asking state lawmakers to consider a new funding source for students at Iowa's smallest state run university.

UNI President and Holstein, Iowa native Mark Nook gathered with alumni in Sioux City Thursday night.

The Iowa Board of Regents is asking lawmakers to allow UNI students to apply for Iowa Tuition Grants.

The $50 million dollar scholarship program is currently only available to low income students at private colleges.

Nook says as the state looks to higher education to solve some a it's deficiet problems, Northern Iowa  must find new ways to support student scholarships .

"We are the institution that really does educate Iowans for Iowa. About 90% of our students come from the state of Iowa and 88% of them go right back to Iowa. So it is important to the state that we are able to get Iowa students in the door, get them that high-quality education that we're so well known for and then back out into Iowa, says UNI President Mark Nook."

Iowa Tuition Grants currently provide up to  $6,000 annually to students at 29 private schools.  UNI receives about $95 million in state aid each year.

But that's far less than Iowa or Iowa State University annually get.
