Near record warmth on last day of winter

Spring begins with around normal temps and rain chances

March 18, 2017 - Spring is just two days away, but Sunday will feel more like May with near record temperatures.

Tonight, skies will remain mostly clear, but temperatures stay warm. Lows will only get into the upper 30's.

Tomorrow, expect mostly sunny skies and a breezy south wind. Winds will gust to 25 mph, only helping to warm us up quickly. Temperatures will soar into the mid 70's on Sunday, (and yes... it is the last day of winter!!) Siouxland's Most Accurate is forecasting a high of 76. The record for Sioux City is 80 degrees from 1921. While I don't think it's likely we'll break the record... we'll be within shouting distance that's for sure!

A cold front passes late Sunday into Monday. No rain is expected, but it will shift our winds to the northwest, bringing in much cooler air for the first day of spring.

Highs will drop 20 degrees on Monday, getting into the mid 50's. While mid 50's is much cooler than Sunday's near record warmth, it is still about 5 degrees above normal. Expect partly cloudy skies and the wind to be less breezy.

Monday is also the first day of spring! The vernal equinox occurs at 5:29AM CDT.

Tuesday we start to bring in a couple of disturbances into Siouxland that produce rain chances through the week. Tuesday a few rain showers are possible, but they're expected to be light and quick. Temperatures get into the upper 40's under partly cloudy skies.

Wednesday, another quick shower is possible, again with light ~0.10" accumulation. Winds start to kick Wednesday ahead of a bigger system, and temperatures hover 50 degrees.

Thursday we start to pull in a low pressure center from the Rockies. This system encompasses all warm air, so precipitation will fall as rain, and winds will be gusty. Windswept rain will start to pick up Thursday evening and last through much of Friday. Rain could be heavy at times, dropping up to an inch. Temperatures stay warm throughout this system, hovering 50 degrees both Thursday and Friday.

We finally dry out Saturday with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the lower 50's.
