Local man arrested after taking taser from cop during foot pursuit

Investigation into stolen car leads to foot chase and officer being disarmed

Sioux City, Iowa - A Sioux City man is in custody after police say he took an officer's taser while running from police early Monday morning.

According to court documents, authorities observed 30-year-old Gregory Sewalson adding air to the tires of car in the 1800 block of Hamilton Boulevard around 2:00 A.M. on Monday. The vehicle's plates were reported stolen last month and the vehicle matched the description of a car that had also been reported stolen.

When approached by officers Sewalson took off running on foot. At one point in the chase a taser was deployed and authorities say that Sewalson was able to get the taser away from the officer and had possession of it.

He was eventually taken into custody and is now facing several charges including Disarming a Police Officer, Eluding, and 5th Degree Theft. Sewalson is currently being held on a $6,000 bond and is due back in court on March 30th at 9:00 A.M.
