Leader of South Dakota's Muslim Community Center speaks on being Muslim in America

Dr. Mohammad Qamar leads Briar Cliff's interfaith discussion

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - What is it like to be a Muslim in America and right here in Siouxland?

Sioux City's catholic diocese invited, Dr. Mohammad Qamar, the leader of the Muslim Community Center of South Dakota, to share his perspective Monday night at Briar Cliff University.

Dr. Qamr said discussions about the Muslim community are important right now.

With recent threats, like the one on the Islamic Center down in Des Moines, he said the rise of anti-Muslim rhetoric, is mainly because they're misunderstood.

"I think that if a community has to be judged by the worst that it has to offer, maybe it should also be judged by the best that it has to offer. That includes people that are engineers, physicians, students," said Dr. Qamar.

In reaction to Iowa Congressman Steve Kings comments on the Muslim community, Dr. Qamar said, politics is politics, what matters most is how we treat each other.

"If we only focus on what is happening in the political arena and forget what are own responsibilities are, I think we're shirking responsibility we all have as citizen as and as fellow humans," said Dr. Qamar. "So to that, I always say, we all have our own responsibilities forget the politics of everything and just engage each other."

Dr. Qamar said the great thing about America is the unity and Muslims here are no different and deserve the same support.

"If we think of America as a masterpiece painting, we all form individual colors of that painting and to take one color out, that painting would no longer be that masterpiece, " said Dr. Qamar.
