Iowa National Guard assist in Florida

En route to Florida to help with recovery efforts

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Members of the Iowa National Guard are en route to Florida to help with help with recovery efforts.

Soldiers on their way to Jacksonville, Florida say they don't know what to expect, but they do know the mission ahead, to help the victims of Hurricane Irma.

These men are answering the call for help on very short notice.

Now, 11 soldiers from the Iowa Army National Guard in Davenport are packing up the next aircraft to head to Jacksonville, Florida.

Scott Millman of the Iowa Army National Guard said, "First step it to get there, second step is to give the support, and then the next step is to get home safely."

For Specialist Karson Smith's First Deployment, he says he's confident he can help.

"Us going down there," says Smith, "it kind of brings a sense of security to the people of Florida who are going thought this heartbreaking situation."

Although Irma is no longer a hurricane, it's already left a destructive and deadly path in Florida and the Caribbean.

These men say they are hoping for the best, but they are still keeping their eyes open.

"The storm is still moving through," said Smith. "We don`t know exactly what the situation is. We know what it could be; we know what it might be."

Millman said, "We expect to see a lot of flooding obviously and really expecting to keep an open mind."

Starting the engines to bring supplies back and forth to those who need it most, a sign that help from Iowa is on the way.

Soldiers planned to be in Florida for at least 10 days. But they're willing to stay longer if needed.
