Grass fire forces home evacuations in rural Hornick

Crews from five departments fought the blaze for hours

SIOUX CITY - A massive grass fire is burned a mile-long area in rural Woodbury County Monday afternoon.

That blaze near Hornick is finally under control after threatening several homes for hours.  Two homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The burned area encompassed about 50 acres between Jasper and Hancock roads in Rural Hornick.

Firefighters from Sloan, Lawton, Bronson, Moville and Oto responded to the fire. It's the second major grass fire of the day to burn in Woodbury County.

Earlier, crews battled a grass fire along a portion of I-29 near the Floyd Monument in Sioux City. That fire was likely sparked by a passing train.
