Folks enjoy indoor activities for rainy day 2 of Orange City's 'Tulip Festival'

'Dutch Dozen' performance, flower show and museum offer Dutch heritage

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Organizers of orange city's 77th annual Tulip Festival say, they've had good crowds the first two days, despite some chilly temperatures and rain.

The Sioux County Historical Museum, was a good place where folks could get out of the rain, on day two of the Tulip Festival and enjoy some Dutch and Sioux County history.

Folks can look at period Dutch clothing, tools and historical artifacts, not to mention, photographs through the ages.

Museum volunteers say, it's a great place for people to get out of the rain and absorb some dutch history.

"We do see more people and they tend to stay longer," said Arlo Van Beek from the Sioux County Historical Society. "So it's fun, we enjoy that, it gives us more time to talk to them, meet them and find out what their story is, as well as they learn our story."

Also in the museum, is the flower show, where 123 bouquets are spread about for folks to see.

All the bouquets are put together by a group of volunteers.

"We just have them come in and they just have fun and we have a bunch of things for them to do and me and my cow-owner, we actually do some bigger, high-style arrangements for them, it's just like a fun day for everyone to get involved," said April Konz from April's Floral Boutique.

Another big part of the tulip festival every yea, the Dutch Dozen.

"The Dutch Dozen are know as the Goodwill Ambassadors of the city of Orange City, they're made up of girls and guys from the two local high schools and they sing and do dances to some songs in Dutch and mostly in English," said Dutch Dozen director, Brande Pals.

The Dutch Dozen have three performances, each day of the festival, continuing Dutch tradition through dance and song.

"I love working with the kids, it's a lot of fun and we've had really good groups of kids," said Pals. "I loved doing it myself when I was in high school and so just being able to continue that tradition is a lot of fun. "
