Cooler 50's for first day of spring

Rain chances start Tuesday and last through Friday

March 19, 2017 - What a summer-like way to end winter! Highs got well into the 70's, even 80's in parts of Nebraska. Sioux City fell just 1 degree short of record, getting to a high of 79 degrees...the record stands at 80 (1921). Spring-like temperatures resume for our first official day of the season.

Tonight, temperatures stay mild under mostly clear skies. Lows will only get to around 40 degrees.

Tomorrow is the official first day of spring! The vernal equinox, when the sun is directly overhead the equator providing equal sunlight to both the northern and southern hemispheres, occurs at 5:29 AM CDT.

While our last day of winter was summer-like here in Siouxland, our first day of spring will be cooler but still typical for March. A northwest wind shift will bring in much cooler 50's for our Monday under mostly cloudy skies.

Tuesday we start to ramp up some rain chances. Rain will be likely Tuesday morning and early afternoon as an upper level disturbance zips through Siouxland. I think temperatures will only be briefly cold enough for some snow, a few flakes possible in the early part of the day, and then we'll warm up to sustain all rain in the afternoon. Rain will be light, only about 0.10-0.25" accumulation.

Wednesday's rain chance is a little less likely because it'll mainly be centered in central Nebraska. Those west of Sioux City could get a quick shower, while those east of Sioux City will likely stay dry. Rain will be light again, only about 0.10" accumulation.

By Thursday we start to bring in a soaker. A strong low pressure center will take aim at Siouxland from the Four Corners Region. It detaches itself from the jet stream, meaning cold Canadian air stays north and we'll see all rain in Siouxland.

Rain looks to start late Thursday afternoon and could become heavy at times on the overnight and into Friday. Totals could be hefty, 1-1.25" is possible. Wind will also pack a punch with this system, remember windswept rain isn't always umbrella friendly!

We dry out for Saturday and keep with the spring-like temperatures. Temperatures stay fairly steady in the 50's all week.
