STORM LAKE, Iowa - There's a unique effort underway to make obtaining a college education easier for some northwest Iowa students, as Buena Vista University in Storm Lake unveiled a new full-tuition scholarship program.
It was announced Thursday afternoon of a new exclusive scholarship that will go into effect this next year.
The details of this scholarship are that every year, BVU will award 10 full tuition, four year scholarships. In return, these award winning students will serve as Iowa College AmeriCorps volunteers in Buena Vista county communities.
To qualify, you have to have graduated from Storm Lake, Saint Mary's, Sioux Central, Newell-Fonda, or Alta Aurelia high schools and be accepted to BVU.
Students would also need to maintain a 3.0 GPA while completing a college prep curriculum, be a first generation college student, and be federal Pell Grant or Iowa tuition grant eligible.
"We wanted to build a scholarship program that supports local first-generation college students who have the potential to be successful in college, but also might have that extra need for the financial support to do so," says Joshua Merchant, BVU President.
To apply students can go to www.bvu.edu/service. Students can apply in March and winners will be announced in April.
