North High was evacuated Tuesday after bomb threat

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - UPDATE: Police say that a North High Student has been arrested for making a false bomb threat 

The Sioux City Police Department say in a release that on Tuesday at 9:50 a.m., they were informed by faculty at North High School of a bomb threat at the school. The threat said that bombs were in many locations and would go off at a specific time. 

Police found nothing suspicious after an initial search and after another search after students were evacuated.

Police say they then arrested a North High student in relation to the bomb threat and they have been charged with False Reporting concerning the placement of any incendiary or explosive device, a class D felony. 

Police say that the investigation is ongoing.

On December 5, 2017, at 9:50 am, the Sioux City Police Department had received information from faculty at North High School that an individual threatened to blow up the school. The threat indicated that there were bombs placed in several locations within the school, and they would detonate at a specific time. 

Officers searched the interior and exterior of the school and nothing suspicious was found, however students were evacuated for safety purposes. After evacuation, officers conducted another search inside and outside of the school and again found nothing suspicious.

A North High School student has been arrested and charged with False Reporting/ concerning the placement of any incendiary or explosive device, a class D felony. The investigation is ongoing.

PREVIOUS: Students were evacuated at Sioux City's North High School at Sioux City's North High School after a threat warning of a bomb set to go off in the building. The school building was swept, but no bomb was found.

The threat was posted to a computer message board earlier Tuesday.

It claimed a bomb would detonate at North High at 1:28 in the afternoon, but no bomb went off.

After a student discovered the threat, north students were evacuated to an off-site location.

Students weren't allowed to return until after the building was swept by police and it was determined to be completely safe.

Sioux City Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman said, "Once we discover who made the threat, we will follow the protocol there with proper discipline procedures within the district. We don't know at this moment if the threat was made by a student within the building or not. We suspect so for specific reasons." 

Police are working to try and determine the person responsible for posting the phony bomb threat, but so far that individual has not been identified.
 

The Sioux City Community School District issued the following statement immediately after the situation:

The Sioux City Community School District is working closely with the Sioux City Police Department following the report of a bomb threat for North High School. The bomb is allegedly scheduled to go off at 1:28 p.m. The threat was first identified by a student that saw the message displayed on a Minecraft message board. In a situation like this, student safety is our highest priority. Therefore, students are currently being evacuated to a safe location identified in the school’s crisis plan. We will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available.
